Patron Perspectives 2024/25 | A Period of Robust Growth

This blog series brings together sector reflections from our Patron network – leaders who play an active role in shaping Kingston’s economy and supporting its business community.

Each piece was first published in our 2024/25 Impact Report, where we asked: what’s changed over the past year – and what’s likely to shape what’s next?

The result is a collection of expert, actionable editorials. Throughout this series you’ll find perspectives on housing, education, digital experience professional services and more, reflecting the challenges and opportunities shaping Kingston’s economy.

The UK construction sector is experiencing a period of robust growth, driven by increased investment in infrastructure, housing and commercial projects.

Government initiatives, such as the National Infrastructure Strategy and the commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, have catalysed significant activity. The demand for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings is also propelling growth as clients seek to align with environmental standards.

SKILLS AND WORKFORCE

While the market is expanding, the construction sector faces a critical challenge in terms of skills and workforce availability. The industry is grappling with a skills gap, exacerbated by an ageing workforce and the impact of Brexit on labour mobility. To address this, there is a pressing need for investment in training and development programmes.

Summers-Inman actively contributes to this effort by engaging with educational institutions like Kingston University and Surbiton High School to raise awareness of construction career opportunities and by supporting apprenticeships and continuous professional development for its staff.

REGIONAL VARIATIONS

The growth trajectory of the construction sector is not uniform across the UK, with regional disparities evident. In the South East and London, the market is buoyant, driven by high demand for residential and commercial properties. Conversely, regions such as the North East and parts of the Midlands are experiencing slower growth, partly due to economic uncertainties and lower levels of investment. However, initiatives like the Northern Powerhouse and the Midlands Engine are expected to stimulate growth in these areas, promoting infrastructure development and attracting investment.

With its eight regional offices across the UK and its local expertise, Summers-Inman is well-positioned to navigate these regional dynamics, offering tailored services to meet the specific needs of each area. We use benchmark information from the marketplace and successful projects we’ve delivered to give accurate advice that can be relied upon.

SUMMARY

In conclusion, the UK construction sector is poised for continued growth, underpinned by strategic investments and a focus on sustainability. However, addressing the skills gap remains a critical priority to ensure the industry can meet its ambitious targets. Regional variations present both challenges and opportunities, requiring a nuanced approach to service delivery.

Summers-Inman remains committed to leveraging its expertise and resources to support the sector’s development, fostering a skilled workforce and contributing to the economic prosperity of the regions it serves. To sustain growth, we recommend collaborating with educational institutions, investing in upskilling, advocating regional investment, and embracing digital technologies and innovative construction methods for enhanced efficiency.
